What to include in an apparel production brief

Give design, sourcing, sampling and production teams the same starting point.

NWN field notes

A practical starting point.

Describe the starting stage.

Tell us whether the requirement begins with an idea, developed designs, samples or production-ready specifications. Identify the garment categories, intended wearer and purpose of the programme. A collection, repeat shirt order and uniform programme can need different coordination. If design or technical development is still needed, include it in the discussion.

Break quantities down by style and colour.

Share the pieces required for each style, each colour and each size. Include the total as a summary alongside the breakdown. Identify colours or fabric qualities that repeat across styles. Material sourcing depends on the actual requirement per fabric and colour. Stock fabric and newly developed fabric may need different sourcing arrangements.

Specify materials and details.

Include fabric composition, weave or knit construction, weight, colour standard, handle and finish where known. Add trims, fastenings, labels, print or embroidery, and packing requirements. If specifications are incomplete, share physical references or swatches and explain which qualities matter. Identify which supplied artwork and designs you are authorised to use.

Make approvals clear.

Share the tech pack, measurement chart, reference sample and previous comments. Identify who will review fit, material, colour and construction, and how feedback will be consolidated. Mark which approvals already exist and which are pending. Samples and specifications should provide one agreed reference for production.

Give the date its full context.

State the delivery location and date, including whether it is tied to a launch, season or event. Material sourcing, development, samples, revisions and approvals need to be considered alongside production and shipment. Share a target cost or budget range where available. NWN reviews feasibility, minimums, commercial terms and timing against the actual programme.
